James Carter Studio and School of Jewelry Arts is currently located in historic Carr Mill Mall in Carrboro, NC. Carrboro, adjacent to Chapel Hill in central North Carolina, is a thriving small community known for its energy and diversity. Carrboro was settled in 1882 and incorporated in 1911. With a population of approximately 22,000 in 2019, Carrboro currently boasts a vibrant Farmers Market and annual music and film festivals.

Carr Mill Mall, home of James Carter Studio and School of Jewelry Arts, is a renovated mid nineteenth century cotton mill with red brick walls, high ceilings and soaring windows. In addition to the studio Carr Mill Mall houses restaurants and retail spaces.

Inside James Carter Studio are individual student jeweler’s benches. Each well-lit bench has its own Smith Little oxygen/propane torch, a Fordham flex shaft, a charcoal block and tripod solder station and a selection of hand tools. Community tools and equipment include sanders, polishers, a twelve-inch shear, a rolling mill, draw plates, anvils and stakes, a drill press and a digital kiln for cloisonne production.

Most classes are limited to four students and are usually staffed by two instructors. Open studio sessions are available for established students and James Carter personally accepts a limited number of private students.
