About the Studio
James Carter Studio and School of Jewelry Arts is located in historic Carr Mill Mall in Carrboro, NC.
Carrboro is adjacent to Chapel Hill in central North Carolina. Both are thriving small communities known for energy and diversity.
Carr Mill Mall is a renovated mid nineteenth century cotton mill with red brick walls, high ceilings and soaring windows.
In addition to the James Carter Studio, Carr Mill Mall houses restaurants and retail spaces.
Inside James Carter Studio are individual student jeweler’s benches. Each well-lit bench has its own Smith Little oxygen/propane torch, a Fordham flex shaft, a charcoal block and tripod solder station and a selection of hand tools. Community tools and equipment include sanders, polishers, a twelve-inch shear, a rolling mill, draw plates, anvils and stakes, a drill press and a digital kiln for cloisonne production.
Most classes are limited to four students and are usually staffed by two instructors. Open studio sessions are available for established students and James Carter personally accepts a limited number of private students.
The James Carter Studio is open on Wednesday evenings from 6pm to 10pm. Open Studio is for all current and previous students.
All tools and equipment are available for student use. Solder and flux is provided. We only ask that participants bring their own metals (www.riogrande.com) or make prior arrangements to purchase from the studio. It is best to allow two weeks delivery time from Rio Grande. If you need advice on what metals to purchase please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Open Studio allows students to practice their jewelry creation and fabrication skills and pursue independent projects.
Instruction is not provided during Open Studio sessions.
There is a maximum of four (4) students at any Open Studio session.
